Root Canal

Root Canals Can Save Your Natural Tooth

When a tooth has experienced trauma or extreme decay, and the tooth’s nerve becomes threatened, fillings are not a sufficient solution. When a tooth becomes this damaged, Dr. Ayyubi has two primary options: he can extract the tooth or he can perform a root canal. The latter option is somewhat involved, but enables you to keep the natural tooth structure firmly in place.

What is a Root Canal?

In a root canal, Dr. Ayyubi carefully removes the tooth’s nerve and any surrounding decay, and replaces the nerve with a manmade material that will guard against future infections. The tooth then is sealed, usually with a crown, to protect it.

Often, a root canal will require two visits to Dr. Ayyubi’s office. On the first visit, Dr. Ayyubi will perform the root canal. This appointment will take significantly longer than an appointment for a filling. To keep you comfortable during the procedure, Upon your request and based of his clinical judgment, Dr. Ayyubi may administer oral conscious sedation to relax you. You will be awake during the procedure, but you will feel extremely relaxed and at ease.

Once the sedative wears off, you’ll likely experience soreness around the tooth. An over-the-counter pain reliever will help. Usually with a day or so, all pain will be gone and your mouth will feel back to normal.

On the second visit, he’ll make an impression of your tooth and then send it to a dental lab. The lab will customize the crown that will be applied over your tooth once the root canal is complete.

Root Canals are Worth It!

No one likes to hear that they need a root canal, but most patients agree that a root canal is a much more desirable option than having their damaged tooth removed altogether. Tooth extractions mean that you will need to have a dental prosthetic such as a bridge or dental implant placed to restore the full function of your mouth. Root canal procedures remove the source of dental pain and also restore the function of the tooth so you don’t have to worry about another lengthy procedure.
