Nervous? Relax with Sedation Dentistry.
Most people don’t exactly look forward to visiting the dentist, but some people are exceptionally nervous or anxious about the thought of having dental work done. They might have a fear of needles or a bad gag reflex. A smaller group of people are downright afraid of going to the dentist — sometimes opting to suffer through damaged or decayed teeth rather than being treated by a dentist. Dental phobias sometimes result from a prior bad experience visiting the dentist.
Fortunately, sedation dentistry can make dental work tolerable for patients who are mildly anxious and for those who are downright scared.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
When using sedation dentistry, Dr. Ayyubi prescribes patients sedatives that will relax them, but will not cause them to lose consciousness. There are two types of sedation that he uses: oral and inhalation.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is when the dentist gives the patient one or more pills to take prior to the visit. The medication belongs to the benzodiazepine (benzo) class of drugs. Triazolam is the most commonly prescribed benzo for sedation dentistry. This medication causes most patients to become deeply relaxed (while still able to talk and answer questions), and to leave the dental office with little memory of the procedure. Oral sedation is ideal for patients with more serious cases of fear or anxiety about their routine or emergency dental visit.
Inhalation Sedation
Another option for sedation dentistry is using nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. Dr. Ayyubi places a scented mask over the patient’s mouth and nose. The mask is connected to a machine that delivers a steady flow of gas, which the patient inhales during the dental procedure. It takes effect quickly, and the effect goes away quickly, too, as soon as the mask is removed. Nitrous oxide relaxes patients and makes them feel “spacey.” It is ideal for patients with milder cases of fear or anxiety.
